“(Re) Pensar a Biblioteca Pública” 1ª Conferência Internacional Bibliotecas Municipais Região de Aveiro

The 1ª Conferência Internacional Bibliotecas Municipais Região de Aveiro (1st International Conference of Municipal Libraries of Aveiro Region) was held from 3-4 March 2016 by the Intermunicipal Community of Aveiro Region, in Anadia. The theme of the conference was "(Re) Pensar a Biblioteca Pública"   ([Re]Thinking the Public Library") and focused on the future of public libraries and the opportunities arising from innovation, change and contemporary developments in the library sector.

"Transforming library services in the digital information environment"

Respresenting IFLA at the event was IFLA Secretary General, Jennefer Nicolson, who gave a presentation on “Transforming library services in the digital information environment”. The presentation emphasized the role of libraries in achieving sustainable development goals; highlighted global influences and trends and identified key national and local opportunities. Librarians were urged to take action and create services valuable to the needs of their communities and to engage in national development plans.

Attending the conference were the Chief Public Librarians from 11 districts in the Aveiro region and representatives from France, Latvia, Cape Verde, US, Netherlands and Spain were just a few of many who attended the event.

Transforming library services in the digital information environment

The success of the event will be taken as a guiding framework for future events in this area, and contribute to some qualitative progress made by Portuguese public librarians.
